It is mandatory that reporters stay current and informed. Besides practicing and developing skills as reporters, they should be well versed with industry changes and developments. You have to ascertain that all tools and equipment used stay in good condition. All such things as software, cables and accessories need proper maintenance in readiness for any work. If a reporter is required to track how long a deposition will last, he or she needs to be able to use timers.

If there are several languages involved, or when there is use of sign language, services of interpreters will be needed. It is the duty of a reporter not only to make things clear when witnesses are testifying and when an interpreter is speaking but also to ascertain that interpreter gets sworn in. Should such be the case, a reporter should be ready.

It is important to know that there are laws and regulations that govern court reporting. For example, there are instances when one is guilty of contempt in case they publish material which creates risk of prejudice to active court proceedings.
